Check if you can apply
Find out whether you can apply to study or work abroad as part of your 精东传媒 degree.
Your options depend on your degree subject, year of study, academic record and the programmes available to your School.

Approved study abroad options
You can only study or work abroad for credit through a University-approved programme.
Before you apply, check the choose your opportunity pages to find the approved options available for your subject.
You cannot choose a university or placement that is not listed as an approved option.
Year of study
Most study abroad programmes are for Junior Honours students.
You cannot study abroad at sub-honours level, or in your final year of study at 精东传媒.
Semester and full-year options
Some study abroad programmes let you study abroad for:
- one semester
- a full academic year
Other programmes only run for a full academic year.
The options available to you depend on your degree subject.
Check the choose your opportunity pages to find out which options are available for your subject.
Subjects with full-year study abroad only
Students studying the following subjects must study abroad for the full academic year:
- Chemistry
- Computer Science
- single Honours Psychology
Joint Honours students
If you are a Joint Honours student, your study abroad options depend on both of your subjects.
Spending a full year abroad
To spend a full academic year abroad, both of your subjects must offer places at the same partner university.
Check the where can I go? pages before you apply.
Splitting your year abroad
If both subjects do not offer places at the same partner university, you may still be able to study abroad by splitting your year.
For example, you could:
- study one subject abroad for one semester
- return to St Andrews for your other subject, or study at a different partner university for your second semester
Choosing your preferred universities
You can rank all the study abroad options available for your School and degree programme in order of preference.
The selection process can be competitive, so only include universities where you would genuinely be happy to study.
Grades and academic requirements
You must meet the academic requirements for your study abroad programme before you can go abroad.
Full details can be found on the Saints Abroad webpage.
Minimum grade requirement
Applicants to Saints Abroad should normally have a minimum average grade of 13.5 in their intended Honours subject or subjects from first year.
For Modern Languages students, there is no minimum first-year grade requirement for study abroad.
Applications are competitive. A strong academic record is the main selection criterion.
Conditions of your study abroad offer
All study abroad offers are conditional.
To keep your offer, you must:
- pass all modules in the academic year immediately before your study abroad period at the first sitting, without resits
- achieve an average grade of at least 11 in Semester 1 of the academic year in which your study abroad interview takes place
- complete any outstanding deferrals by the end of the May exam diet before departure
- attend the Study Abroad pre-departure briefing session in April. This usually takes place on the Wednesday of Week 11 or Week 12. The Global Office will send further information by email.
- sign a Pre-departure Agreement confirming that you accept the University’s Study Abroad terms and conditions
An offer may be withdrawn after Semester 1 results are published in January if you do not meet the required average grade.
Additional conditions and exceptions
Some subjects have different requirements.
Language requirements for Europe
Many European exchanges are for students in Modern Languages.
Students in other subjects may also have options in Europe. Several partner institutions offer courses in English as well as the host language.
Some partner universities also offer courses in their country’s main language before or during the semester. These courses can help you meet other students.
See preparatory courses for more information.
Studying abroad in your home country
The University does not prohibit study abroad in your home country.
You should think carefully about your reasons for applying and prepare to explain them to the selection committee.
For competitive programmes, the selection committee may give priority to students who they think will benefit most from experiencing another culture.
Postgraduate students
If you are a postgraduate research student, you may be able to study abroad through an exchange programme. Check with your supervisor for the options available in your discipline.
Most postgraduate taught programmes last one year, so study abroad is usually not possible. However, 精东传媒 does offer some two-year postgraduate taught programmes that include a placement abroad.
