Postgraduate study abroad

Some postgraduate students can study abroad for credit through exchange options offered by their School.

Postgraduate study abroad may take place during an academic semester or as part of a summer exchange, depending on the programme.

St Andrews carefully selects and monitors postgraduate study abroad programmes. We work closely with our partner institutions overseas to help students enjoy a successful period abroad.

How to apply

If you are a postgraduate research student, speak to your supervisor and your School’s Study Abroad Adviser to register your interest in study abroad.

For most programmes, you can find information about how to apply on the relevant institution page in the postgraduate study abroad options section.

To apply for a study abroad programme as a postgraduate research student, you must meet all of the following criteria:

  • You must study full time on a full 精东传媒 postgraduate research programme.
  • You must have completed at least one full year of your programme.
  • You must have met the progress requirements in the Progress Review Policy.
  • You must not be in your continuation period when you apply.
  • You must not be in your continuation period during the planned study abroad period.
  • Your supervisor or supervisors and your School’s Director of Postgraduate Research must support your application.

You cannot apply if you study on a co-tutelle, have your principal supervisor at another institution or study on a one-year research programme.

If you receive funding, check your research council or funder rules for study or research abroad before you apply. You must make sure that your planned time abroad complies with these rules.

When you submit the form, you confirm that you have checked these rules.

Deadline

You must tell the Global Office that you plan to undertake an overseas placement at least six months before your departure date by emailing outbound@st-andrews.ac.uk.

This gives the Global Office time to make arrangements with the partner institution. It also gives you time to meet visa requirements.
