Turing Scheme

Turing scheme funding is available for students on study and work placements which are an integral part of their degree whether optional or compulsory.


About the Turing Scheme

The provides funding to help eligible students take study and work placements around the world.

The Turing Scheme supports UK education providers. The manages the scheme, which helps students gain international experience, develop skills and improve their employability.

The University secured Turing funding for the academic year 2025–2026. The University has applied for funding for the academic year 2026–2027.

Students may apply for Turing Scheme funding if their study or work placement forms an integral part of their degree. This includes optional and compulsory placements. The University may also fund other activities, including short-term research placements for postgraduate students.

The Global Office will contact all confirmed study and work abroad students early in the calendar year to invite applications. The Global Office may open applications for other student groups during the year if funding allows.

The University also offers a range of University of 精东传媒 scholarships and bursaries. These have their own deadlines and application processes.

Funding information

The University applies for Turing Scheme funding each year. The University submits its institutional application in March.

The Global Office will invite applications from students taking part in study or work abroad opportunities. The University will contact students who apply through the internal application process after it receives its institutional award. The University usually receives this award at the end of the summer.

Funding levels for 2025–2026

Turing Scheme funding helps students with daily living costs.

The amount you receive depends on your destination and the length of your placement. Destinations fall into two groups:

  • Group 1 covers higher-cost destinations
  • Group 2 covers lower-cost destinations

Students who complete placements lasting more than 57 days receive the 57 to 365 day rate for the whole placement.

Funding rates for students who do not meet the disadvantaged background criteria are:

Funding rates for students from disadvantaged backgrounds are:

You must keep your bank details on up to date so the University can process your funding.

Your mobility start date is the first date you must attend your placement. It is not the date you arrive at your placement. Placements can only receive funding from 1 September onwards.

Extra funding for specific circumstances

Students from disadvantaged backgrounds may be able to receive extra funding. Students who meet the UK government’s criteria for special educational needs or disabilities may also be able to receive extra funding.

Students from disadvantaged backgrounds

Students from can receive extra funding for readiness to travel, travel and higher living costs.

Disadvantaged students may include students who:

  • have a household income of £35,000 or less (in the academic year 2026–2027)
  • receive income-related benefits
  • have care leaver status
  • have caring responsibilities
  • have estranged student status
  • have refugee status
  • have asylum seeker status

Students with special educational needs or disabilities

Students with special educational needs or disabilities (SEND) may receive extra funding for additional costs related to international placements. This can include costs such as pre-placement visits.

You should not apply for Turing Scheme funding for costs that the Disabled Students’ Allowance (DSA) already covers. You can apply for costs that DSA does not cover.

The Turing Scheme can fund up to 100% of actual costs. You must provide receipts for additional needs funding.

You must provide evidence at the start of your placement before the University can request this funding. You should make arrangements at your host destination as early as possible so you can collect evidence quickly.

The University will apply for this additional funding on your behalf if you tell the Global Office that you may be eligible. You must provide evidence of your eligibility as part of your application to the Global Office.

Documentation

Students must sign and return documents before you go, while you are away and after you return from you placement abroad.

Funded students on study and work placements that form part of their degree must complete these steps:

  • Attend the compulsory pre-departure meeting in April each year.
  • Upload the Pre-Departure Agreement by 31 May using the Outbound Documentation Tool in .

Documents to complete

All funded students must complete these documents:

  • Sign and return the award letter.
  • Complete a Certificate of Arrival, signed by all parties including the host institution, as evidence of placement dates.
  • Complete a Student Acknowledgment of Receipt of Grant (SARG) form after each payment.
  • Complete a Certificate of Attendance, signed by all parties including the host institution, as evidence of placement dates.

The Global Office sends each Student Acknowledgment of Receipt of Grant (SARG) form directly to the student.

Return each SARG form on time

You must return each Student Acknowledgment of Receipt of Grant (SARG) form within four weeks of receiving each grant payment.

The Global Office cannot make further payments until you return your Student Acknowledgment of Receipt of Grant (SARG) form.

Payment timeline

The Global Office uses this payment timeline:

  1. The Global Office sends the award letter towards the start of the placement.
  2. The Global Office usually sends the first payment within two weeks after you sign and return the award letter.
  3. You must return the first SARG to the Global Office before you can receive the next payment.
  4. Students studying abroad for one semester or taking a placement shorter than one semester receive 90% of their funding at the start of their placement and the final 10% at the end.
  5. Students studying abroad for one semester or taking a placement shorter than one semester must sign two SARGs in total.
  6. Students on a year abroad receive 45% of their funding at the start of their placement, 45% at the start of semester two and the final 10% at the end.
  7. Students on a year abroad must sign three SARGs in total.
  8. The Global Office sends the Certificate of Attendance to students before the end of the placement.
  9. You must return a signed Certificate of Attendance before the end of your placement.

Students studying abroad for one semester or taking a placement shorter than one semester will not receive their final payment until they return their Certificate of Attendance.

Students on a year abroad will not receive their second payment until they return their first SARG. They will not receive their final payment until they return their second SARG and Certificate of Attendance.

If your placement ends early, the Global Office may ask you to repay a proportion of your funding. The Global Office may need to return this funding to the National Agency.

Turing Scheme funding is a grant, not a loan. The University administers the grant on behalf of the British Council, which runs the scheme for the UK government.

Extending placements

The Global Office cannot guarantee funding for placement extensions.

If you know about an extension before you sign your award letter, tell the Global Office before you sign it. The Global Office will try to add the extension to the award letter.

You can also request an extension during your placement. You must contact the Global Office at least one month before your original placement end date.

Future of Turing

The Turing Scheme will operate until at least the end of the 2026–2027 academic year.

The University normally applies for funding in March for the following academic year. The University normally receives the result in July.

Student funding

Your current student finance arrangements remain in place.

You should contact your student finance company directly for more information about your funding.

Annual funding

The University cannot guarantee Turing Scheme funding in any given year. The University receives Turing Scheme funding each year based on its institutional application.

The University will invite applications from students taking part in study or work abroad placements. The University may also invite applications for other activities, such as volunteering and summer placements. The University will apply for funding on your behalf.

The Global Office may contact students with additional calls for applications during the year, depending on available funding.

The University cannot guarantee that its funding applications will succeed. The University will usually tell you the outcome of its funding application in August before the academic year in which your activity will take place.
