Scholarships for study abroad and work placements
There is a range of scholarships available to students undertaking study and work abroad programmes.
Saints Abroad Scholarships
The Global Office offers a range of scholarships for undergraduate and postgraduate students studying or working abroad as part of their degree.
The Saints Abroad Scholarship portfolio helps students with the cost of these opportunities. Award amounts range from a few hundred pounds to £12,000.
A range of donors generously support these scholarships and bursaries.
Exchange programme scholarships
Some exchange programmes have scholarships attached.
To be considered for these scholarships, you must first apply for and be selected for the relevant Study Abroad programme.
If you receive a scholarship for your exchange or Study Abroad programme and return home early, you must return the scholarship funding.
Robert Lincoln McNeil Scholarship
- Partner: University of Pennsylvania
- Details: one generous scholarship of $40,000 (US dollars) which covers most of the cost of room and board, plus other expenses.
- Eligibility: applicants must have grown up in a Scottish cultural background.
Robert T Jones Scholarship Programme
The Robert T Jones Scholarship Programme is managed by the Development Office.
- Partner: Emory University
- Details: Covers board, transatlantic airfares and a generous personal allowance.
- Eligibility: Applicants must be of British nationality. This scholarship is only open to graduates.
Canadian Robert T Jones Jr. Scholarships
- Partners: Queen's University and Western University
- Details: up to eight annual scholarships of $13,000 (Canadian dollars) are offered by .
- Eligibility: this scholarship is available to students selected for either of the above exchanges. Applicants will be asked to write a short essay on Bobby Jones as part of the application process. Further details regarding the scholarship will be sent directly to students who have been accepted to either Queen’s or Western by the Study Abroad team.
Moncrieff Travel Scholarship - Polar Ecology and Scientific Diving
The Moncrieff Travel Scholarship - Polar Ecology and Scientific Diving fund supports a range of student mobility for credit.
The Moncrieff Travelling Scholarship for:
- BL5124 Polar Ecology (Antarctic field course)
- BL4249 Scientific Diving
supports undergraduate and postgraduate students in the School of Biology who take these named modules.
Students can apply regardless of fee status.
The University awards scholarships competitively, based on demonstrated financial need. Individual awards range from £1,000 to £3,000.
External scholarships
These scholarships are not managed by the Global Office.
British Universities Transnational Exchange Scholarships
- Provider: provides support to students from member universities.
- Details: Students create a piece of media (vlog, blog, poster) about their preparations for or their experience of their time abroad.
- Eligibility: Students leaving and arriving at a BUTEX member university (including 精东传媒) are eligible to apply. BUTEX scholarships are awarded based on the calendar year, with applications open in the summer months. Students can have already completed their placement by the time they apply, they may already be on placement or they may be preparing for a placement in the future. For full details, see the .
DUO-Singapore Exchange Fellowship
- Provider: Government of Singapore (administered through the National University of Singapore)
- Details: Merit-based award supporting paired exchanges between European and Singaporean universities Each selected undergraduate student will be awarded €4,000. webpages for more details.
- Eligibility: Full-time undergraduate students from European partner universities undertaking an exchange at NUS may apply. Awards are made on a competitive basis as part of paired exchanges between institutions.
German Academic Exchange Service
- Provider: provides support for a variety of opportunities in Germany.
- Details: the Deutscher Akademischer Austauschdienst (DAAD) scholarships are aimed primarily at graduates, doctoral students and postdoctorates, and are awarded for study and research visits to universities and non-university research institutions in Germany. DAAD also funds one month German language courses at universities (for students at all levels), summer internships (usually in Sciences and Engineering), recent graduate placements and short-term research exchanges.

The R&A International Scholarship
- Provider: The R&A International Scholarship
- Details: Three scholarships fund a year of international travel. Development manages these scholarships, not the Global Office.
Stevenson Exchange and Scottish-Italian Scholarships
- Provider: The Stevenson Exchange and Scottish-Italian scholarships support student mobility in France, Germany, Italy and Spain
