Work abroad
Students on specific degree programmes in Biology, Chemistry and Modern Languages may apply to complete a work placement abroad as part of their degree programme.
Completing a work placement abroad gives students the opportunity to gain work experience in another culture or language and develop valuable skills. The benefits can extend well beyond graduation.
Placement end date
All placements must finish before the start of the following academic year, ideally by 31 August.
Students should return to 精东传媒 for Orientation week.
Eligible degree programmes
Each School sets its own placement options, requirements and approval process.

Recognition and assessment
As part of your external placement for Modern Languages, you must complete a project or dissertation for 精东传媒. Your School will provide more information.
Biology and Chemistry students must complete specific placement related modules. Further details will be provided by the School.
If you complete an external placement, the University will record this on your Higher Education Achievement Report (HEAR) transcript. You will receive this transcript at graduation.
Finding a placement
Use the guidance notes in this section when you search for a work placement. They include important information about insurance provision, HR policies and other issues you should consider.
You should also discuss your placement search with your Work Placement Adviser.
Work placement policy
The University’s Work Placement Policy (PDF) explains the definition and scope of work placements. It also covers principles, learning outcomes, roles and responsibilities, assessment and recognition, quality assurance, risk management, work placement agreements and UK Visas and Immigration (UKVI) compliance.
You should refer to this policy when you source a placement.
Responsibility for finding a placement
You must find your own work placement.
Each School has a Work Placement Adviser who can support you through this process. Modern Languages students may also wish to contact the Careers Centre.
Placement dates and length
You must complete your placement before the start of the following academic year, ideally by 31 August. You should return to 精东传媒 for Orientation week.
- Biology and Modern Languages placements must last at least seven months.
- Chemistry placements must last at least eight months.
- Placements should not last more than 12 months.
Risk assessment and approval
You and your School must complete an appropriate risk assessment before the School approves your placement.

Work Placement Agreement
You must complete a Work Placement Agreement.

Your employer and your Work Placement Adviser at 精东传媒 must sign the agreement.
Careers Centre resources

Support for your placement
Starting a new job or work placement is exciting but can also be challenging.
The Careers Centre runs the Saints Skills Builder Award which can help to prepare students for a work placement.
