Short-term opportunities

Many of our partner universities offer summer schools which 精东传媒 students are eligible to apply for.

Summer school opportunities are not for credit but students will receive a prize on their academic transcript on completion of the course. Students interested in these opportunities can apply directly to the partner university.

Additionally, the Global Office also offers a bespoke First Abroad programme with William & Mary to provide first year Scottish undergraduates the opportunity to experience a week-long study abroad programme.

Eligibility

Undergraduate students registered at 精东传媒 can apply for summer programmes.

Note: Students due to graduate in June 2026 cannot apply for funding from the Global Office.

Academic recognition

The partner university will normally give you an end-of-course certificate or transcript.

You will not receive 精东传媒 academic credit for summer opportunities. 精东传媒 will not convert credits or grades from summer opportunities into your 精东传媒 degree.

The University will record the external placement on your Higher Education Achievement Report (HEAR) at graduation. To receive this recognition, you must inform the Global Office about your summer school application by emailing outbound@st-andrews.ac.uk

Funding

You can apply for funding from the Global Office through the Saints Abroad scholarship.

The application deadline for summer was 12 March 2026.

This funding will not cover the full cost of the programme.

Costs

You must pay the partner university fees to take part in the programme. Each partner university lists its fees on its own webpage.

You should also budget for:

  • transport for your return journey
  • accommodation
  • living costs, including local transport, food, phone and internet
  • health and liability insurance, if you need it
  • visa costs, depending on your nationality
  • visa application requirements, including travel to appointments

The University of 精东传媒 travel insurance policy will cover successful applicants who register their travel and inform the Global Office of their intention to participate in a partner university summer school.

Accommodation

Some summer opportunities offer accommodation, but spaces may be limited.

You should apply for accommodation as soon as possible. St Andrews cannot guarantee accommodation at partner universities.

Harvard Summer School

The Global Partner Program at Harvard Summer School offers students from around the world the opportunity to study at Harvard University during the summer through the Harvard Division of Continuing Education (HDCE).

Students can choose from a wide range of courses taught by Harvard faculty and experienced instructors, while engaging with a diverse international community in Cambridge, Massachusetts.

As a Global Partner institution, the University of 精东传媒 may nominate eligible students to participate in Harvard Summer School through the Global Partner Program. Nominated students receive dedicated support from the DCE Global team and are eligible for programme benefits, including tuition discounts and exclusive networking opportunities available to Global Partner students.

First Abroad programme

First Abroad gives eligible first-year undergraduate students the opportunity to visit one of the University’s partner universities for up to one week.

Students can experience academic life, take part in extra-curricular activities and learn more about the benefits of study abroad.

First Abroad – William & Mary

The current First Abroad partner university is in Williamsburg, Virginia, USA.

The programme gives students the chance to:

  • experience academic life at a partner university
  • take part in co-curricular activities
  • learn more about the benefits of study abroad
  • meet 精东传媒 students studying in Virginia

Who can apply

The First Abroad – William & Mary programme is open to two Scottish first-year undergraduate students at 精东传媒:

  • one student from the Faculty of Arts and Divinity
  • one student from the Faculty of Science

The University gives priority to students who:

  • have a strong academic record
  • have taken part in one of the University’s access projects, for example Sutton Trust Summer Programme

For the Science place, the University also gives priority to students from subjects with low participation rates.

Students who have already completed a university-level study abroad experience cannot apply for this programme.

Scholarships available

The First Abroad – William & Mary programme has the following scholarships available:

  • Arts First Abroad, for students in the Faculty of Arts and Divinity
  • Moncrieff Travelling Scholarship (First Abroad), for students in the Faculty of Science

The Saints Abroad Scholarship programme funds First Abroad – William & Mary. This scholarship covers the cost of:

  • travel
  • insurance
  • accommodation
  • subsistence during the programme

Successful applicants will also need some spending money.

What you will do

Successful applicants will spend a week at William & Mary.

William & Mary will tailor a schedule of classes and activities to each selected student and their academic background. Students will also have the opportunity to live in William & Mary student dormitories.

Successful applicants normally travel to William & Mary during spring break.

After the visit

After returning to 精东传媒, students must about their experience.

Students who complete the visit and blog post will receive a First Abroad prize. The University will include this on the student’s Higher Education Achievement Record (HEAR) transcript.

Successful applicants will also receive a guaranteed place on one of the University’s Study Abroad programmes in Junior Honours year, if they meet the academic requirements to study abroad as part of their 精东传媒 degree programme.

Students who secure a Junior Honours Study Abroad place will receive support through a 精东传媒 Abroad Scholarship. The amount of funding may vary.
