Insurance for study or work abroad

You may have cover through the University’s travel insurance policy if you study or work abroad as part of your degree.

Some destinations, partner institutions or visa processes may also require separate health insurance. Check the insurance requirements for your destination and partner institution before you travel.


University travel insurance policy

The University’s travel insurance policy covers 精东传媒 students who have permission to study or work abroad as part of their degree programme during the 2026–2027 academic year.

The University’s current insurance provider is

RSA Insurance - Healix
Policy number: PA04282305

The policy covers:

Any undergraduate, postgraduate or non-graduating matriculated student of the Insured undertaking approved travel within the UK and worldwide.

What the University policy covers

The University travel insurance policy includes cover for:

  • unlimited medical expenses
  • cancellation and curtailment
  • repatriation
  • personal liability insurance
  • baggage delay
  • loss of or damage to personal belongings
  • loss of travel documents, including your passport

The policy has a £100 excess for all claims.

Emergency medical assistance abroad

Students covered by the University’s policy can contact Healix for emergency medical assistance abroad.

Healix provides 24-hour emergency assistance, 365 days a year.

When you may need additional health insurance

The University travel insurance policy is not the same as health insurance.

You may need separate health insurance if:

  • your host country requires it
  • your visa process requires it
  • your partner institution requires it
  • you have a pre-existing medical condition
  • you need healthcare cover for the full length of your exchange

Check your destination and partner institution requirements carefully before you travel.

Partner university insurance requirements

Some host universities require students to buy their campus health insurance. This is common at many North American, Australian and Asian partner institutions.

The following partners do not accept the University’s current insurance provider, so you must buy additional insurance. The partner institution will often offer this insurance:

Healthcare cover in Europe

You may be able to use a valid

  • European Health Insurance Card (EHIC)
  • Global Health Insurance Card (GHIC)

for local healthcare in most European Union (EU) and European Economic Area (EEA) countries.

A valid EHIC, new EHIC or GHIC may provide the cover you need, depending on your destination.

Exceptions

Some countries have exceptions, including

  • Iceland
  • Liechtenstein
  • Norway
  • Switzerland.

You may need personal healthcare insurance for these countries.

Mandatory health insurance requirements

Some European countries have mandatory health insurance requirements.

Germany is one example. Depending on your citizenship, age and status, you may need to have your cover recognised by a German statutory health insurance company or buy private health insurance.
