ScotGEM academic requirements

To be considered for interview, ScotGEM applicants must have achieved or be predicted to achieve a 1st or 2.1 Honours degree, or equivalent. Honours degrees in Arts, Science and other disciplines will be accepted. 

In addition, applicants must have achieved or be predicted to achieve the following academic requirements over and above the Honours degree:

  • one of Chemistry or Biology or Human Biology at Higher or A Level (grade A or B), ILC H2 or equivalent
  • Mathematics at Standard Grade (Credit 1 or 2), Intermediate 2 (grade A or B), National 5 (grade A or B), or GCSE (grade B), ILC Ordinary Level O3 or equivalent

Guidance

  • Applicants will not be considered if their first degree does not meet the degree requirement, even if they subsequently gain further degrees (2.1 or 1st class Honours degree, Masters or PhD).
  • Applicants who are on, or have been on, a medicine degree course will not be considered. This includes transfer students or those on an intercalating degree.
  • A lower second-class Honours degree followed by a second degree (first or upper second-class Honours, Masters or PhD) will not be accepted.
  • Applicants can re-sit Chemistry, Biology or Mathematics qualifications to achieve the required grade, or grades, if not achieved at the time of leaving school.
  • We may be able to accept 20 credits of undergraduate Chemistry or Biology or Maths at high grades. Modules of mixed science, for example, Biochemistry, are not accepted, modules must be purely of the required science. Maths module content must be diverse and not focus on one specific aspect of Maths, for example, Calculus or Geometry. Please email us if you would like us to check an alternative qualification.
  • Access courses and HNC or HND qualifications are not accepted.
  • A GPA of 3.5 is considered to be the equivalent of an upper second-class Honours degree. For advice with regard to degree classifications from other countries, please .
  • If you have not yet achieved your degree, the reference should include a predicted degree classification.
  • Graduates need to supply an academic transcript of their performance at university at the time of application.
