DESCRIPTION:Title:聽Worlds: Possible and Impossible \nAbstract: In this talk\, I鈥檒l reflect on the role of worlds鈥攂oth possible worlds and impossible worlds鈥攂oth in the聽semantics of various kinds of languages and logics\, and in broader issues in metaphysics. I will argue that\, given very modest assumptions concerning the role of worlds in semantics\, that any defender of possible worlds in such a role should be聽equally comfortable with impossible worlds.\n\n\nHowever\, this argument for impossible worlds does聽not transfer straightforwardly to聽logically impossible worlds. So\, in the second part of the talk I will consider what we might say\, for (or against) properly logically impossible worlds.

DESCRIPTION:In Defence of Individual Rationality: \n聽 \nCommon-sense (or folk) psychology holds that (generally) we do what we do for the reasons we have. This common-sense approach is embodied in claims like 鈥淚 went to the kitchen because I wanted a drink鈥� or 鈥淪he took a coat because she thought it might rain and hoped to stay dry鈥�. However\, the veracity of these common-sense psychological explanations has been challenged by experimental evidence (primarily from behavioural economics and social psychology) which appears to show that individuals are systematically irrational 鈥� that often we do not do what we do because of the reasons we have. Recently\, some of the same experimental evidence has also been used to level a somewhat different challenge at the common-sense view\, arguing that the overarching aim of reasoning is not to deliver better or more logical decisions for individual reasoners\, but to improve group decision making or to protect an individual鈥檚 sense of self. This paper explores the range of challenges that experimental work has been taken to raise for the common-sense approach and suggests some potential responses. Overall\, I argue that the experimental evidence should not (currently) lead us to a rejection of individual rationality.

DESCRIPTION:The Feminist Philosophy and Social Theory Seminar is delighted to welcome Jonathan Flowers\, Professorial Lecturer in the Department of Philosophy & Religion at American University\, who will be delivering a talk titled 鈥楾he Affective Quality of Gender鈥�: \nTitle: The Affective Quality of Gender \nAbstract: \n聽 聽 聽While Judith Butler recognizes that identity\, specifically gendered identities\, are established through a stylized repetition of acts\, and Shannon Sullivan connects this stylized repetition of acts to John Dewey鈥檚 concept of habit\, this talk will seek to advance upon these theories by presenting the gendered identity established by these habits as one that is affective and qualitative\,聽by placing聽both Butler and Sullivan聽in conversation with Richard Shusterman鈥檚 鈥渟omaesthetics鈥� and the aesthetic philosophy of John Dewey.聽 \n聽 聽 聽On this view\, the different gendered habits which are taken from聽or imposed upon us by culture serve to enable an affective perception of the body as聽not only聽gendered\, but聽gendered in a specific way in line with our cultural expectations. This affective perception serves the ground of our immediate judgments of the gender of a body and serves to enable the denotation of bodies聽as gendered聽in social space.聽 \n聽

DESCRIPTION:Abstract:聽Value capture occurs when an agent enters a social environment which presents external expressions of value 鈥� which are often simplified\, standardized\, and quantified 鈥� and those external versions come to dominate our reasoning and motivations. Examples include becoming motivated by Twitter Likes and Retweets\, citation rates\, ranked lists of best schools\, and Grade Point Averages. We are vulnerable to value capture because of the competitive advantage that such pre-packaged value expressions have in our reasoning and our communications. But when we internalize such metrics\, we damage our own autonomy. In value capture\, we outsource the process of deliberating on our values. And that outsourcing cuts off one of the key benefits of personal deliberation. When we tailor our values to ourselves\, we can fine-tune them to fit our own particular psychology and place in the world. But in value capture\, we buy our values off the rack.

DESCRIPTION:Title: Properties and Their Parts \nAbstract: I will present some very early ideas on a hyperintensional theory of properties that I am attempting to work out. I will begin my presentation by considering an unlikely area of inquiry: the mereology of material objects. I will offer a framework for thinking about two distinct types of parthood for objects. One type leads to an unstructured conception of objects; the other leads to a structured conception of objects. I will then suggest that there is a roughly analogous framework for thinking about parthood for properties. Once this framework for properties is in place\, I will turn my attention to the theory of properties\, what I call 鈥榯he theory of property embodiment鈥�. \nThe theory of property embodiment draws its inspiration from a theory of objects that endorses a structured conception of objects. The theory of objects that I have in mind is Kit Fine鈥檚 theory of embodiment. For what Fine has to say about objects serves as a sort of blueprint to what I would like to say about properties.聽Whether or not I can properly extend Fine鈥檚 theory in the way that I would like is something that I want to explore during our seminar. \n聽

DESCRIPTION:Authority and Group Assertion\n\nWe commonly attribute assertions to groups like companies and government institutions\, and we want to hold them accountable for their assertions. Intuitively\, we don鈥檛 attribute those assertions to the individuals performing them\, but to the groups. The question is: what kind of speech act is group assertion and how does it relate to individual assertion? Is it reducible to de second? In this work\, I defend an account based on having the authority to assert on behalf of the group. I take support from Lackey鈥檚 (2018) account of group assertion. I argue that her account has some important problems and I try to give a more succinct account of group assertion.

DESCRIPTION:For our next seminar聽we will be having our second session on the theme of 鈥楧angerous Speech\, Free Speech and Cancel Culture鈥�. Derek Ball will be presenting a work in progress titled 鈥楢 Limited\, Metasemantic Defense of Cancel Culture鈥�. \nTitle:鈥淎 Limited\, Metasemantic Defense of Cancel Culture鈥漒nAbstract:聽\nHume wrote\, 鈥淲e cannot form to ourselves a just idea of the taste of a pine-apple\, without having actually tasted it鈥�.聽 Putnam claimed聽that brains in vats could not entertain thoughts about the external world\, since thinking such thoughts requires genuine contact with the world one is thinking about.聽 These are claims about how one鈥檚 circumstances constrain what one can think 鈥� what contents one can entertain.聽 This talk aims to develop the notion of a content constraint\, and to relate this notion to issues of free speech.聽 A leading idea is that free speech requires adequate conceptual and linguistic resources\, and that this requirement can motivate actions designed to avoid content constraints (including constraints that might be caused by the actions of other speakers).聽 On plausible metasemantic assumptions\, there could be cases in which deplatforming or cancelling are appropriate responses to speakers whose speech threatens to create constraints for others; but care is needed to determine exactly what kinds of cases might justify these responses.

SUMMARY:Epistemology Seminar: Nick Kuespert (精东传媒) 鈥淎ims of Moral Inquiry鈥�
DESCRIPTION:Abstract: What should the interaction between non-experts and experts look like when it comes to moral inquiry? In this talk\, I discuss this interaction from both perspectives. In the first part\, I argue that whether non-experts should treat experts as authorities or advisors depends on the aim of moral inquiry which in turn varies with context. I propose a hybrid model: by default\, the aim of moral inquiry is moral understanding and non-experts should therefore treat moral experts as advisors. If\, however\, moral understanding is unavailable or only attainable at high risk\, moral knowledge becomes the aim of moral inquiry and non-experts should treat moral experts as authorities. In the second part\, I argue that we should be careful not to conceive of moral experts as completely analogous to non-moral experts. In particular\, we can expect that many moral experts will be those negatively affected by injustices. This creates special procedural obligations for non-experts in their pursuit of moral expertise.

DESCRIPTION:Abstract: In this work-in-progress\, I build from Iris Marion Young鈥檚 notions of inclusion and exclusion and Kristie Dotson鈥檚 framework of epistemic oppression\, to show how some traditional views about what counts as a good source of justification can participate to internal epistemic exclusion\, which contributes to second order epistemic oppression. Whilst theories of justification often seem detached and independent from social structures\, I aim to cast doubt over the apparent fairness of the process of engagement with one another\, as some epistemic agents are subjected to internal exclusion\, even though they are reasonable and engage with the rest of the group. This leads me to argue that members of oppressed groups who use affective experience as a source of justification are unduly excluded from epistemic exchanges. In contrast\, I explain why conspiracy theorists who argue on the basis of their affective experience should remain duly excluded.

DESCRIPTION:Title:聽Impossible Worlds in Dynamic Epistemic Logic \nAbstract:聽Epistemic Logic\, as a spinoff of normal modal logics\, suffers from the problem of logical omniscience: its agents are perfect reasoners with unlimited deductive power. We argue that\, even from a normative point of view\, this modelling is inadequate for it sets requirements that cannot be actually attained according to solid empirical evidence. We therefore design a non-standard dynamic framework\, making use of (a) impossible worlds (not closed under logical consequence)\, and (b) quantitative components capturing the agent鈥檚 cognitive capacity and the cognitive costs of inference rules with respect to certain resources (e.g. memory\, time). These ingredients allow us to avoid problematic logical closure principles and at the same time account for the agent鈥檚 bounded reasoning steps. Moreover\, such impossible-worlds models induce聽awareness-like structures\, contributing towards a unifying overview of the omniscience literature and the extraction of useful formal results. We finally show that this approach can be generalized in order to encompass the dynamics of higher-order reasoning\, communication\, group deliberation\, and thus do justice to multiple facets of human reasoning.
