In this talk\, I aim to do two things. First\, I argue that there are compelling reasons for thinking that there is a property of nonexistence and that it is possibly exemplified. Thus\, Serious Actualism\, as standardly construed\, is false. Second\, I defend a neglected approach to Serious Actualism. I distinguish between a strong and a weak formulation of the view by drawing on the distinction between truth in\, and truth at\, a possible world. I argue that we should endorse only the weak formulation of Serious Actualism. It is published by the American Psychiatric Association and revised by committees of psychiatrists ever fifteen years or so. This talk considers the DSM as a 鈥榗onceptual building site鈥. For successful conceptual engineering to be possible we would need to be able to聽 (i) figure out how concepts might be defective and how they might be improved\, and (ii) bring about conceptual change. In the literature on conceptual engineering\, many seem to assume that (i) is fairly easy\, but that (ii) may be very hard. Essentialism and potentialism have much in common\, but little has been said about their relation to聽each other. The aim of my talk is to better understand the聽relations between聽essence and potentiality\, on the one hand\, and between essentialism and potentialism\, on the other. It is argued\, first\, that essence and potentiality are聽not duals but interestingly linked by a weaker relation dubbed 鈥榮emi-duality鈥;聽second\, that聽given this weaker relation\, essentialism and potentialism are not聽natural allies but rather natural competitors; and third\, that the semi-duality聽of essence and potentiality allows the potentialist to respond to an important聽explanatory challenge by using essentialist聽resources without thereby committing to essentialism. It argues against the view that sees presuppositions as an indirect counterpart of the direct speech act of assertion and proposes instead that they are much more similar to the direct speech act of assumption. More concretely\, it suggests that the norm that governs presuppositions is not an epistemic or doxastic attitude such as knowledge\, justified belief\, or mere belief; it鈥檚 a practical attitude\, most plausibly the attitude of rational acceptance. This view has important ramifications well beyond debates in philosophy of language and linguistics. Should we聽regard聽the technical notions these formalisms define as engineered concepts? In this talk I will present a critical view of the feasibility of conceptual engineering in logic and foundations of mathematics\, drawing on a few key examples:聽the concept of 鈥渕odel\,鈥 which emerged聽slowly and under significant internal pressures; the concept of computability\, and from my own work the concept of formalism independence/formalism freeness. The Thesis is widely endorsed\, but arguably false and refuted by empirical research. To fix it\, we submit\, we need a聽relevance constraint: we accept a simple conditional 鈥業f 蠒\, then 蠄鈥 to the extent that (i)聽the conditional probability p(蠄|蠒) is high\, provided that (ii) 蠒 is relevant for 蠄.聽How (i) should work is well-understood. It is (ii) that holds the key to improve our聽understanding of conditionals.聽We propose a formal framework giving acceptability and logical closure conditions for simple indicatives: its probabilistic component (i) uses Popper functions;聽its relevance component (ii) is given via an algebraic structure of topics. We then聽present the resulting logic. We argue that its (in)validities are both theoretically聽desirable and in line with empirical results on how people reason with conditionals. In this talk I will argue that this thought is correct. In particular\, I will argue that the right kind of philosophical theory about the nature of persons can help us to recognize the possibility of an underappreciated form of silencing that can lead us to misunderstand one another\, explain why these forms of misunderstanding can often be symmetric\, and illustrate how such symmetric forms of misunderstanding can drive and perpetuate good-faith conflicts even between perfectly well-meaning parties.
