Austin) \u201cPseudo-material shadows cast by grammar\u201d"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>In section IV of \u2018On Referring\u2019 (1950), P.F Strawson warns us of the \u201clong philosophical shadows\u201d cast by the subject-predicate distinction. \u201cThe distinctions between particular and universal, between substance and quality,\u201d he says, \u201care such pseudo-material shadows, cast by the grammar of the conventional sentence in which separable expressions play distinguishable roles.\u201d Although Strawson later offered some qualifications on this claim, I will show how, in his book Individuals (1959), he adheres to its basic spirit.
