Mary Kate McGowan (2019, 2012, 2009) has argued that norm shifting is an effect of any move within a norm governed activity. Thus, moves in a conversational game change the norms of that game. McGowan also argues that individual acts can be parallel moves in multiple games at once. This paper identifies and explains a phenomenon called carry-over effect. I argue that parallel moves are insufficient to account for carry-over effects. The solution is a hierarchy of games. Specifically, a conversational game is embedded in a larger social game. Each game has a separate but related set of roles for participants and targets. I show how this provides a solution to the problem of carry-over effects. In particular, I argue that the idea of invited inference explains the fallacious reasoning that audience members employ in order to export conversational low-power roles to corresponding social roles. I discuss two candidate mechanisms that explain an incremental shift in social norms: a Bayesian rule of belief\/attitude updating and an associationistic rule between the target and low-power roles based on group-membership. I conclude with brief remarks on the conditions under which harmful norms can spread, become dominant and persist.<\/div>","excerpt":"","slug":"language-and-mind-seminar-9-2022-04-05-2022-05-10","image":false,"all_day":false,"start_date":"2022-05-10 12:00:00","start_date_details":{"year":"2022","month":"05","day":"10","hour":"12","minutes":"00","seconds":"00"},"end_date":"2022-05-10 14:00:00","end_date_details":{"year":"2022","month":"05","day":"10","hour":"14","minutes":"00","seconds":"00"},"utc_start_date":"2022-05-10 11:00:00","utc_start_date_details":{"year":"2022","month":"05","day":"10","hour":"11","minutes":"00","seconds":"00"},"utc_end_date":"2022-05-10 13:00:00","utc_end_date_details":{"year":"2022","month":"05","day":"10","hour":"13","minutes":"00","seconds":"00"},"timezone":"Europe\/London","timezone_abbr":"BST","cost":"","cost_details":{"currency_symbol":"","currency_code":"","currency_position":"prefix","values":[]},"website":"","show_map":false,"show_map_link":false,"hide_from_listings":false,"sticky":false,"featured":false,"categories":[{"name":"Language and Mind Seminar","slug":"language-and-mind-seminar","term_group":0,"term_taxonomy_id":40,"taxonomy":"tribe_events_cat","description":"","parent":0,"count":153,"filter":"raw","id":40,"urls":{"self":"https:\/\/www.st-andrews.ac.uk\/arche\/wp-json\/tribe\/events\/v1\/categories\/40","collection":"https:\/\/www.st-andrews.ac.uk\/arche\/wp-json\/tribe\/events\/v1\/categories"}}],"tags":[],"venue":{"id":4853,"author":"2","status":"publish","date":"2019-05-20 16:36:32","date_utc":"2019-05-20 15:36:32","modified":"2020-07-03 22:00:34","modified_utc":"2020-07-03 21:00:34","url":"https:\/\/www.st-andrews.ac.uk\/arche\/venue\/edgecliffe-g03-2\/","venue":"A virtual seminar by Zoom","slug":"edgecliffe-g03-2","address":"The University","city":"精东传媒","country":"United Kingdom","zip":"KY16 9L","json_ld":{"@type":"Place","name":"A virtual seminar by Zoom","description":"","url":"https:\/\/www.st-andrews.ac.uk\/arche\/venue\/edgecliffe-g03-2\/","address":{"@type":"PostalAddress","streetAddress":"The University","addressLocality":"精东传媒","postalCode":"KY16 9L","addressCountry":"United Kingdom"},"telephone":"","sameAs":""},"show_map":false,"show_map_link":false,"global_id":"www.st-andrews.ac.uk\/arche?id=4853","global_id_lineage":["www.st-andrews.ac.uk\/arche?id=4853"]},"organizer":[],"custom_fields":[],"json_ld":{"@context":"http:\/\/schema.org","@type":"Event","name":"Language & Mind Seminar: Mihaela Popa-Wyatt (University of Manchester)","description":"<p>Norm-Shifting through Oppressive Acts This paper explains how social norms are changed by oppressive speech.
