Advancement Via Individual Determination
AVID, or Advancement Via Individual Determination, is a college readiness system designed to increase the number of students who enroll and persist in four-year colleges and universities. AVID's proven learning support structure incorporates teaching and learning methodologies in the critical areas of writing, inquiry, collaboration, organization and reading (WICOR).
AVID Elementary
AVID Elementary is based on the same learning foundation that underlies the AVID Elective and AVID Schoolwide philosophies. It is designed to integrate all elementary classrooms' daily routines and curriculum across entire grade levels to impact schoolwide structures. The intentional systemic approach provides different resources for different levels, settings, and infrastructures to support all students on their path to college readiness.
AVID Secondary
Students enroll in the AVID elective at the secondary level and receive support to succeed in their school's most rigorous classes, such as honors and Advanced Placement. In this class, students learn organizational and study skills, work on critical thinking and how to ask probing questions, get academic help from peers and tutors, and participate in enrichment and motivational activities to make college attainable.
The goal of AVID is to ensure that ALL students:
- Will succeed in rigorous curriculum
- Will enter mainstream activities of the school
- Will increase their enrollment in four-year colleges
- Will become educated and responsible participants and leaders in a democratic society
The AVID student must have "determination," the determination to succeed in the demanding course requirements of four-year colleges and universities.
